Connecting the Big Sky State

Investing in a new fiber future for Montana

Illustration of the route through Montana

Montana Infrastructure Project

IIG is expanding its Montana fiber infrastructure with the installation of a new fiber optic line across the state. The project will increase the availability of high-speed internet in the Big Sky State, offering critical network services to IIG’s clients including local internet and telecommunications service providers. When complete, this new backbone of fiber connectivity will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure over more than 600 miles of Montana. The project started in 2023 and is expected to be complete in 2024 or early 2025.

  • Construction Advisories

IIG is partnering with construction companies to install the fiber line. Fiber will be laid in the right-of-way of city, county and state jurisdictions. Depending on conditions, crews will be directional drilling, plowing or trenching fiber optic cable. Traffic control will be in place to ensure the safety of crews and the traveling public around construction zones. Traffic control may include reduced speed zones and single-lane closures.

FAQs

Where is the installation happening?

The installation is happening from the southeast corner of the state to the Montana/Idaho border, loosely following the I-90 corridor and Montana Highway 200 route in northwest Montana.

How will the project impact communities?

Most of the construction will take place along the side of primary and secondary highways. In towns, construction will take place along public streets and utility easements. IIG’s public relations team will be notifying communities prior to construction start.

Who is funding the Montana Infrastructure Project?

The project is funded completely by private dollars. No taxpayer dollars are being used for this project. IIG works in the best interest of the public and is building the fiber backbone to support the increasing demand of local fiber projects that are improving network services to businesses and homes.

When will fiber service be available?

Service will be available to IIG clients at the end of the project in late 2024 or early 2025.

Who are IIG's clients?

Our clients include network providers that offer local internet and telecommunications services and large organizations whose content makes up a significant portion of the Internet. These are the companies that the public relies upon to provide network services to their businesses and homes. IIG does not provide local internet services directly to businesses or homes.
